HUD Streamlines Environmental Reviews for Multifamily Construction

Officials seek to streamline processes for building affordable multi-family homes.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced changes to environmental review policies for multi-family housing construction by the Federal Housing Administration (FHA). In an effort to reduce costs for plot development and modernize requirements, various changes are being made to the Multifamily Accelerated Processing (MAP) Guide.

“This is about fixing policies that have made housing expensive and difficult to build,” said HUD Secretary Scott Turner. “We are cutting outdated requirements, reducing costs and delays, and putting FHA financing back to work to support housing production and improve home affordability for American families.”

Standalone railroad vibration assessments are being removed, policies for pressurized pipelines will be restored, and updated standards for powerlines are included in the revisions. The changes are applicable to any FHA mortgage application that has not yet reached initial endorsement. HUD said it is seeking to streamline processes while ensuring that housing meets federal standards.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Turner to be prudent as he oversees HUD’s protocols for homebuilding.
  • For HUD officials as they implement the new rules and regulations for multi-family housing construction.
